Dixie Chicks - Taking the Long Way

By: S6 Staff - Tom
With controversy over their conflict with our nation's President, the Dixie Chicks fell in popularity VERY quickly. However, their devoted fans, such as myself, know that they are respectable for not backing down on what they think or believe. When this album was released, I rushed to F.Y.E. to pick it up. To my dismay, they didn't carry it for "reasons relating to remaining unbiased". Well, now, I had to have my Chicks, so I promptly ordered it off the internet. Let me tell you, this is the best 13 dollars I have ever spent in my life. This album is pure genius - the Chicks don't get any better than this. Through the many ups and downs of their careers, they pull through and release this work of art.
Speaking of music, there are no tracks I don't like on this album. There are so many different stories going on, but if you pay attention carefully, you can get the big picture from the lyrics of the entire album. If you don't listen to the ENTIRE album, it won't make a bit of sense; But, if you listen through, I'm sure you'll catch the unifying theme. Overall, this is another slamming album from the Dixie Chicks! Their reign over the country-rock genre will continue for years to come because of this album! BUY IT NOW!
Recommendations:
"Lullaby" - An absolutely beautiful melody. This song is about how love is not a maybe thing - you know when you're in love, and the character in this song most definitely is. Very soothing and calming for when you're mad.
"Bitter End" - My favorite track off the album. This is going to be playing at my high school graduation party. It's a song about how it sucks to leave things and people that you've known for a long time, and that you need to make the best of the time you're allowed to have before going into the real world.
"Not Ready to Make Nice" - This was the first single off Taking the Long Way, and it certainly deserved it. This is the most blunt song on the album - it says that the Chicks will forgive Bush for what he said, but they will never forget. It's about regret, sorrow, and anger. It's a great song.
