Evanescence - The Open Door

By: Tom

Following the success of their first big studio album, "Fallen," Evanescence has gone through some lineup changes and even more image changes. With their second major album, "The Open Door," meeting major success, they're on their way to "every song is an instant classic" status. Debuting at number one all over the world, Evanescence hashad their share of the spotlight, but it just seems they won't give it up, as the album is still selling strong.

As far as the actual music goes, their sound has matured very much, straying away from the ex-boyfriend redundance of "Fallen." With a strong opening track, "Sweet Sacrifice," the album blossoms into more dark and beautiful goodness. With the huge success of their first single, "Call Me When You're Sober," most fans were not already familiar with the opener, being so overshadowed by the single. Altogether, the album is another hit, being well received all around the world.

Recommendations:
"Lithium" - A simply amazing song. Almost desperate, it shows lead singer Amy Lee's desire to give up something, though it's not exactly clear what. This track is possibly the most dynamic, incorporating a slow, melodic chorus with guitar-and-drum-driven verses, and a powerful bridge.

"Cloud Nine" - This is the most random song on the album. The message changes many times, but it still turns out to be a great song, visiting themes such as rejection, acceptance, and anger. It has a great opening, with a spooky, disembodied voice singing. Also, the bridge is simply pure genius.

"Snow White Queen" - Possibly the most blunt and daring track on the album, this song is sung about sexual advances and rape. Amy belts out the chorus, singing "You belong to me, my snow white queen," as if someone is forcing her to stay with them. A great track with a serious message.
