Between the Buried and Me
By: Jennifer D.
This progressive/thrash/metalcore band formed in 2001 in North Carolina and have not stopped making great music since. They have 4 CDs (self-titled, The Silent Chorus, Alaska, and The Anatomy Of…) but soon to be 5 CDs with the release of "Colors" in September 2007. Considering their first 2 albums were awesome, I personally love Alaska the most because it’s a full-length album filled with such a variety of sound that it easily blows anyone’s mind. Their 4th CD “The Anatomy Of…” is actually a cover CD (who does that?!). They cover songs from Queen, Pink Floyd, Pantera, Smashing Pumpkins, and a variety of other bands. It’s actually very impressive and they do a great job showing their love for their influences.
While not making awesome CDs, the band is on various tours with a slew of other hardcore bands. Their live show is one of a kind, with the lead singer playing keyboards for every other song and the guitarist nailing every last note. The guys of the band are incredibly nice and down to earth, even shy sometimes. Most of all, they are unbelievable musicians making really good modern hardcore music.
Recommendations:
"Mordecai" - This song from their second CD immediately breaks into deep, hardcore singing. You might initially get turned off if you aren’t usually into hardcore music but just keep listening. First you’ll wonder how such a voice comes out of petite singer, Tommy. Then you’ll get about 3 minutes into the song and hear a completely different voice that is actually beautiful singing. This is followed by a pretty good guitar solo and you’re left wanting more.
"Selkies: The Endless Obsession" - My favorite song from them because of the beat about 2 minutes and 15 seconds in and because of the singing about 4 minutes in. This singing part is also followed by a moving guitar solo that will leave you wanting EVEN more still.
"Medicine Wheel" - A slow drum-y song with no lyrics. Very soothing and cool.
