Deftones
By: Jennifer D.
Chino Moreno (singer), Chi Cheng (bassist), Stephen Carpenter (guitarist, and pro video game golfer), Abe Cunningham (drummer), and Frank Delgado (keyboardist, DJ)
Some would say the Deftones are on the same level as bands such as KoRn and Limp Bizkit. I guess the difference would be that the Deftones didn’t get as popular, as fast. This left the Deftones a chance to stay grounded, laid back, and really all about the music. Being a band since 1988 (when most of the members were a mere 16 years old), the Deftones have truly evolved, musically and emotionally, over the past 2 decades.
Recommendations:
“7 Words” – One of the coolest rock songs, with the coolest beats, and the best screaming part you can ever imagine. I’ve lost my voice completely due solely to this song. (It’s 10x better live)
“My Own Summer (Shove It)” – Let’s just put it this way: Having to go through life without ever hearing this song is like going through life without ever eating an orange. You’ve probably already heard it and know what I’m talking about…even if it was overplayed in ’97.
“Passenger” – This is the song featuring Maynard James Keenan (Tool; A Perfect Circle). The lyrics (which surprisingly suggest some sort of meaning. Most other songs seem pretty cryptic when it comes to lyrics) have many suggestive thoughts behind it. The main breath-catcher for this song is Maynard’s voice mixed with Chino’s voice. Prepare for chills.
“Hexagram” – One of two of the heaviest songs on this mostly slow album. Awesome song live and its usually during this song that Chino jumps in the audience. (I like to think it’s because there’s a few lines where he says “and the crowd goes wild” and when he says that, including the fact that he is IN the crowd…everyone goes absolutely wild)
“U, U, D, D, L, R, L, R, A, B, Select, Start”– No lyrics. One of those put-on-repeat-to-fall-asleep-to or to study to or to just sit back and relax. I really don’t know whether to cry or be happy when I hear it. Mostly because the melody of the guitar and the drums mixed together are mind blowing. They DO play it live and if you close your eyes, you will definitely feel out of this world.
