Jenny Owen Youngs
By: S6 Staff - lz. Jenny Owen Youngs is probably my newest indie artist to keep an eye out for. She's kind of a mix between Liz Phair, Regina Spektor, and Cat Power. Her sound is indie and acoustic and suits every mellow moment you can imagine. Whether it's the pessimist-mellow, the introspective-mellow, or the mellow-mellow. (I hope that made sense.) Her newest album, "Batten the Hatches" was actually released in 2005, but didn't get too much attention until her single "Fuck Was I" was used in the season two opener of Showtime drama, "Weeds." She re-released it in 2007 and has since gained even more attention. Especially with her cover of Nelly's "Hot In Herre." Yes. Nelly's "Hot In Herre." I didn't stutter. Recommendations:
"Fuck Was I" - Bitter yet honest. That's really how I would describe this song. It's a personal song and it tells a story. I really think you should get this song if you want to know the sound of this talented artist. "Hot In Herre" - Ok. If you liked the Nelly version, and you like indie/acoustic music also: check this out. Surprisingly, her take on the club-hitter is really really good. I absolutely love it. It's not a parody, don't get it twisted, she just did her version of the song in a great way. Everyone from Perez Hilton to....me loves this song. =D "Drinking Song" - What can I say about this song that hasn't already been said? It's wonderful in that it captures all the feelings you get when you're staring at the bottom of a liquor bottle. Not that I've ever felt this way because underage drinking is bad and I don't condone it =]
